Set a channel topic or purpose
Add or edit a channel topic
The channel topic appears in the channel header, and anyone in the channel can modify it. It's a quick way to let people know what members in the channel are working on or important dates like project deadlines.
Topics can be up to 250 characters in length and can include emoji. ✨

- At the top of the channel, mouse over the current topic.
- Click the topic to edit it.
- Enter your new topic.
- Press Enter to submit the new topic, or Esc to cancel.
- Tap the channel name in the header to view the channel details.
- Tap Edit.
- Add a channel topic.
- To finish, tap the back arrow.
- Tap the channel name in the header to view the channel details.
- Tap the pencil icon next to Topic.
- Add a channel topic.
- To finish, tap Save.
Tip: Type /topic and your text to quickly update the channel topic.
Set or edit a channel purpose
A channel's purpose is a short description of the channel's intended use. On desktop, it appears when members browse channels and in the channel details pane. The channel purpose can be up to 250 characters.

- At the top of the page, click the Show Channel Details icon to open the details pane.
- Click Channel Details, then set a channel purpose.

Click Done to finish.
- Tap the channel name in the header to view the channel details.
- Tap Edit.
- Add a channel Purpose.
- Tap the back arrow to finish.
- Tap the channel name in the header to view the channel details.
- Tap the pencil icon next to Purpose.
- Add a channel purpose, and click Save to finish.
Who can use this feature?
- All members except for Guests can use this feature.
- Available on free and paid plans.
