Change a member's full and display names
Name changes are sometimes needed for a variety of personal and professional reasons. Here’s how to change the full name or display name of a member:
Change a member's full name and/or display name
Standard and Plus plans
Enterprise Grid plan
Here's how Workspace Owners and Admins can make name changes:
- From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
- Select Administration from the menu.
- Choose Manage members.
- Find the member you'd like to update, and click on their full name and/or display name to edit.
- Enter the new name(s) and click save. 👍🏼
Individual workspace level
Here's how Workspace Owners and Admins can make name changes:
- From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
- Select Administration from the menu.
- Choose Manage members.
- Find the member you'd like to update, and click on their full name and/or display name to edit.
- Enter the new name(s) and click save. 👍🏼
Enterprise Grid organization level
Here's how Org Owners and Admins can make name changes for all workspaces connected to the Enterprise Grid organization:
- From your desktop, sign in to your Slack Enterprise Grid, then click Manage Organization.
- Under Organization, click Members
- Find the member you'd like to update, and click their full name.
- Click Edit Profile.
- Enter the new full name and/or display name and click Save Changes.
Keep in mind: You will not be able to make changes to a member's account with the same or a higher permission role than you.
When single sign-on (SSO) is enabled
If your workspace uses single sign-on, make sure your settings allow members to change their display names. If this is disabled, you won't be able to update display names for any members.

Tip: Workspaces with SAML-based SSO can update members' names from within the identity provider. It will be updated the next time the member signs into Slack.
Display name guidelines
You can also add custom guidelines for members to follow when creating their display names. Here's how:
Standard and Plus plans

Here's how Workspace Owners and Admins can add their own guidelines:
- From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
- Select Administration, then Settings & permissions.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Next to Display Name Guidelines, click Expand
- Select Custom Guidelines and enter display name guidelines for your workspace.
- Click Save.
Individual workspace level
Here's how Workspace Owners and Admins can add their own guidelines:
- From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
- Select Administration, then Settings & permissions.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Next to Display Name Guidelines, click Expand
- Select Custom Guidelines and enter display name guidelines for your workspace.
Enterprise Grid organization level
Here's how Org Owners and Admins can add guidelines for all workspaces connected to the Enterprise Grid organization:
- From your desktop, sign in to your Slack Enterprise Grid, then click Manage Organization.
- Under Settings, click Organization Policies.
- Next to Display name guidelines, click the pencil icon.
- Select Custom Guidelines and enter your own guidelines.
- Click Save Policy.
- Workspace Owners/Admins and Org Owners/Admins can access this feature.
- Available on paid plans.
