Guide to Slack import and export tools
Depending on your Slack plan, there are a few import and export tools available, so read on to learn more.
Import data to Slack
-
Available for all plans
If you're starting a new Slack workspace, Workspace Owners and Admins can use the import tool to pull existing messages, files, and members from one of these sources: another Slack workspace, a CSV or text file, or a third-party app (HipChat, Flowdock, Campfire, or Chatwork).
Export workspace data
Download public channel data
-
Available for all plans
On any plan, Workspace Owners and Admins can export and download all public channel data: messages and links to files included.
Download all workspace data
-
Available for the Plus plan
Only Workspace Owners can request access to a self-service export tool to download all data from their workspace. This includes content from public and private channels and direct messages. - Available for the Free and Standard plans
This tool is available to workspaces on the Free and Standard plans under limited circumstances. We require Workspace Owners on these plans to provide (a) valid legal process, (b) consent of members, or (c) a requirement or right under applicable laws.
Note: The download of content may be limited depending on the plan you've purchased, your data retention settings, and your sharing or invite settings. Visit Customize message and file retention policies for more information.
Note: As of April 20, 2018, we're discontinuing Compliance Exports. Workspaces with Compliance Exports enabled will still have access to all workspace data through the new export tool.
Use the Discovery API
-
Enterprise Grid and select Slack plans
Discovery APIs allow eligible Slack customers to use third-party applications to export, retain, or archive messages and files submitted to Slack. This includes messages and files migrated to a Slack Enterprise Grid org.
