Giphy for Slack

With the Giphy app for Slack, you can search Giphy’s library for GIFs and share one (or seven!) in Slack.


Share a GIF 

  1. Type /giphy <your text> in the message field. (e.g. /giphy slack)
  2. Press Enter to send.
  3. Giphy will post a random GIF that matches your text.

With the Giphy previews turned on you'll be able to preview the GIF privately before posting. You can even click Shuffle until you find the GIF you like best!

Tip: Using common words and phrases can return unexpected results. Search Giphy with care!

 

Additional Giphy commands

Random GIFs, not your style? Here are some other /giphy commands you can use.

Slash Command Result
/giphy #1 <insert text here> Posts the current top GIF for that search term.
/giphy #caption <insert text here> Adds the caption to a GIF based on your search term.
/giphy #caption “quote” <insert text here> Adds a specific caption to a GIF.
/giphy #weather <insert zip code here> Gives you a GIF that relates to the weather.

Set up the Giphy app

By adding the Giphy app to Slack, members can use a simple slash command to instantly load a random GIF in a channel or direct message.

  1. Visit the Giphy app page in the Slack App Directory.
  2. Click Install.
  3. Click Add Giphy Integration.

 

Once the app is set up, your members can use the /giphy command to post GIFs in channels and direct messages.✨

Tip: Too many GIFs? Type /collapse in the message field to hide all the images in a channel. 🙈 


Manage Giphy settings

Select a maximum GIF rating

GIF ratings are set to G - General Audiences by default. Members who have the ability to configure apps can change the rating for GIFs displayed by the Giphy app.  

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Administration, then Manage Apps from the menu.
  3. Locate and click on your Giphy configuration.
  4. Select a GIF rating.


Turn on Giphy previews

To give members a chance to preview a GIF privately before posting to a channel or DM, you can Enable Giphy previews.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Administration, then Manage Apps from the menu.
  3. Locate and click on your Giphy configuration.
  4. Check the box next to Enable Giphy previews.
